"I have lived and worked on Bruny Island for the past 15 years. It is a place of rugged dramatic cliffs; statue-like islands and wild unpredictable weather. A place of sublime, awe-inspiring beauty. My painting intentions are simple; to create a sense of place that reflects both my emotional and physical involvement. The process however is endlessly confronting. I paint, posed between my knowledge of the outside world, and my internal ponderings of an imagined one. Both reinvigorate each other, stimulating new painted interpretations and new possibilities of seeing.
My focus emphasizes the powerful aspects of nature, towering cliffs, transient cloud forms, a world in perpetual motion. A distant horizon merging sea and sky invites feelings of vastness. Often the tone I want to capture comes so fleetingly and inexplicably to me. In painting I concern myself with the relationship between different colours and tones, shapes and lines that flow together. The works shifts, waves come and go, clouds form and dissolve until some illusory connection is made, and the painting feels whole, tenuously complete.
Ultimately the paintings synthesize my knowledge of place with the freedom this allows to focus on interpretations of mood and atmosphere."
