Our work Recipients to Italy 2009

This award supports Tasmanian based artists practicing across all art forms for a self-directed residency in Italy. The award aims to promote artistic and professional development.

2009 / JONATHAN KIMBERLY

A painter, whose work investigates interrelations between Western and Indigenous concepts of landscape and country, Kimberley has been working closely with Aboriginal custodians Gloria Andrews and Jim Everett to engage with the Meenamatta rock engravings in north-east Tasmania.

While in Italy he will visit famous pre-historic Italian rock engravings to investigate possible similarities of approach to image making between Tasmanian Indigenous and early western representations of place.

This will form the basis of new paintings based on a contemporary re-interpretation of the origins of mapping and landscape imagery.
